  • u might wanna check ur distributer mogual
  • You have 40 degrees initial timing(i.e. 40 degrees at idle)?
  • Base timing for a typical sbc will be anywhere from 0-22 degrees advanced. Typically the ignition timing will get advanced as rpms are increased so while at 900 rpms(idle) you have 12 degrees of timing, by 2000 you have 24 degrees, and by 3000 rpms you have 36 degrees of total timing. If you are getting 40 degrees of timing at idle there is definitely a problem. Did you time the motor with the vacuum advance connected? If so disconnect it and try again. Also, check the advance weights and springs in the distributor. More than one has been known to seize up due to age giving full advance at idle. The only other items that would have an effect on this would be the pickup or the module. What kind of distributor are you using? HEI or aftermarket?
  • First of all, make sure the distributer is tight. If you can move it at all then that is probably your problem. The pickup coil is under the module inside the distributer. it is a small cube with some wires coming out, and right next to an eight pointed star(the exciter). Check for movement in both coil and exciter.
  • I have a 350 Chevy engine that won't start. The TDC is correct, have repositioned the distributor, fixed the firing order. I can get spark, back fire, but not start! Suggestions anyone?
  • I swapped 305 for 350, had problems with the distributor I reused from the 305 due to the car (85 Monte Carlo SS) having Electronic Spark Control (ESC). I put in a generic small block chevy distributor with vaccum advance and a supercoil from ACCEL. I timed it to 8 degrees BTDC and have not had a problem since. Also, on a 350, the timing tab on the engine is on the drivers side, where it is right on the top center of the timing chain cover on the 305. It is possible that if you re-used the crankshaft dampener from the 305, the timing mark on the dampener assembley itself is not going to line up with the 350's timing tab. I put #1 at TDC and engraved a new timing mark onto the dampener in accordance with the 0 degree mark on the timing tab. Engine runs great. Good luck, I hope my information is useful.
  • ARE YOU SURE THE DISTRIBUTOR ISN'T 180DEGREES OUT? TRY REMOVING IT AND TURNING THE SHAFT 180DEGREES AND RETURN IT BACK INTO THE BLOCK AND SET THE BASE TIMING....
