Because enough people like their music and buy their records:
"Since the beginning of her career with The Supremes and as a solo artist, Ross has sold more than 100 million records."

"One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his other achievements feature multiple Guinness World Records—including the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time"—13 Grammy Awards, 22 American Music Awards (20 only as a solo artist, including one for "artist of the century"), 17 number one singles (including the four as a member of the Jackson 5), and estimated sales between 350 million and 750 million records worldwide."

So, when those people sell records in the 100 millions, it does not make such a difference if *you* like them or not.
You don't pay attention to music, huh??
Diana Ross was one of the Supremes in the 60s. The Supremes were early Motown singers. She was the lead singer, and became the focal point for the group. (1st three videos.) She went on to a successful solo career.
Michael Jackson started out with the Jackson 5, had a successful career with them, then had the number one selling album of all time with Thriller. He also convinced MTV that there was a market for his type of song/videos, breaking the "color barrier" on MTV. ( Here's one - No embedding allowed - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkGOiS75Lwk )
