Are you happy with the colour of your skin? Or would you have preferred to be darker or fairer?

I am a white man and my wife is born of a white father and a Native American mother. She is a little too dark for my liking so I rarely permit her to go out it the sun and I tell her to buy makeup foundation that she can use to make herself paler looking.

You have a problem with the word? We live in a very nice neighborhood and I don't want her to be a problem for my neighbors in thinking their property values would slip. I mean I could have her dress as a maid or something but I prefer she just busy herself in the back garden if she goes outdoors.

It's good you think so highly of your neighbors and the property values that you keep you wife from getting too dark.

What's even better is that you "have" your wife dress a particular way. We can't allow the women-folk to decide on their own clothing; that would be anarchy.

Of course, she diverts her eyes in your presence and never speaks unless spoken to, right? You don't allow her to use the front entrance of the house, do you? Have you trained her properly to shine your shoes to a mirror finish?

Okay, let me make a confession.

Social norms where I come do not permit my dark-skinned wife to come within shadow-length of me. This means that her shadow cannot fall on me, not even the faintest shadow, or I shall get polluted. She has to keep her appropriate distance. The only time I allow her to come close to me is in the dark because at that time there is no shadow. And it has to be pitch dark, or else her slightest shadow will pollute me.

So, much as I want to screw her with dim lights on, it goes against socially acceptable norms, and we literally grope each other trying to find each other's private parts before we engage. You wouldn't believe this but I have only felt my wife's naked body, never actually seen it because of the darkness. And, to protect myself against pollution if she lays eyes on my naked body, I blindfold her with a black handkerchief.

Please don't broadcast this confession to all and sundry, or it will ruin my reputation on Answerbag.

I do not know enough about India to comment so I cannot judge, Wisdom Tooth (I do understand Caste systems though... how are you not unclean and cast out by marrying her?), but for an American to do what he described, well, is reprehensible.

I am not white and, if anyone suggested such a thing to me, they would be ejected from my presence rather, errr, forcefully.

I am not aware of any social norm of the type WT describes! This when he is a Parsi and not a Hindu. Parsis don't have a caste system. Even among Hindus who do have a caste system, much as we would like to get rid of it, there is no superstition about the shadow of a dark wife falling on a pale husband 'polluting' the man concerned. Or is it a superstition peculiar to Parsis, WT? Please enlighten me and others....

Her mother is Native American that married her father a white man that visited his brother that came here from Germany. Her father returned to Germany with her mother and she and her siblings grew up there.

If I believed you for a split second I would hope that she grows some self esteem and kicks you promptly, and with enthusiasm, to the curb.

Luckily, my white wife does not think that I am a mark of dishonor or disease to be hidden. She thinks of me as a guy whose ethnicity is irrelevant, just like I think of her.

I would have very much expected him to come to my "defence" and exposed the "ridiculousness of my answer by saying that I know Wiz is a parsi anbd parsis do NOT hold such prejudices.

That comment lends credence to the impression that you are either telling the truth or feeding us a line on purpose. You did not want it to be seen. That meant that your words were meant to go under everyone's radar.

They did not. They sounded my bullshit alarm and I wrote to Suby because of said bullshit alarm. You had not thought your lie through very well. I knew that in such a Caste system and with your beliefs as stated you would not have married her. Also, what you described was in the ridiculous zone.

Hello Arisztid, Cog and WT: Parsis practice Zoroastrianism and they do not have a caste system. All parsis are as clean and unpolluted as any other among them. That is my understanding and I fail to see the satire in WT's comment.
Arisztid mentioned about the Dom Caste among Hindus. I give a brief explanation about the Doms among Hindus:

Dom caste in India are those who have the hereditary right of disposal of dead bodies of all other castes. This particular privilege has made those belonging to the caste very rich, as they charge for their services according to the paying ability of the deceased people's relatives. Still they are considered to be among the lower castes in the Hindu Caste system.

While many from the Doms have made use of the reservation system for education and job opportunities offered by the Indian Government and have migrated to fields as wide and diverse as Teaching, Manufacture and Information Technology, they are not willing to give up their Caste identity and their traditional rights - disposal of dead bodies by burial or cremation - which is very lucrative!

Did you know that there were kings from Doms who ruled their kingdoms as well as any other in ancient times? There is a palace of the former Dom Maharaja on the Banks of River Ganges at Varanasi at Harichandra Ghat. Harichandra who was a Khatriya - Caste of the general ruling class - and the former Khastriya King had been appointed the as the caretaker of a cremation ground at Harichandra Ghat by the then Dom king!

Much as we in India would like to get rid of the caste system among the Hindus and Sikhs, those from the lower castes are unwilling to give up the their caste identity and status which would result in their loosing out on the benefits and privilages offered by the Government with an intention to bring the lower castes at par with the higher castes.

I do not consider Doms unclean as they maintain the same hygiene standards as any other caste and also perform a very essential function in the society - same as the undertakers in the western countries.

I know some about the Doms and, from what I have heard, they, basically, fall victim to the Caste system, which I thoroughly condemn. Thankyou much for the history of them!

I understand the point of the lower Castes that you describe but think it is detrimental.

But I did want to talk more about Doms and how they continually made remarkable contributions to the world of medicine for several centuries - but for them modern medicine's knowledge of human anotomy would have been less than complete... I would have wanted to say a few words on that - thats if anyone is interested in hearing about it...

You said you did not know enough about caste systems in India. Fair enough, accepted. But Suby, presumably on your drawing his attention to this thread as he is so knowlegable on matters concerning India, DID say that he was surprised by my assertions considering that i am a Parsi and Parsis do not have a caste system. He could have, at that point, said that knowing me as well as he does, my statement appeared to be a joke, and could have asked me to confirm it. But he didn't. He chose, instead, for reason best known to him, to take the path of enquiry, and to ask to be "enlightened" about this "superstition peculiar to parsis". I hold Suby in very high regard, but I must say here that by saying what he did he sowed the seeds of suspicion and prejudice.

You are, of course, free to continue to wallow in your feeling of self-righteousness. I do know that Answerbaggers have put you on a pedestal so high that it has made you giddy with pride; and I shan't come in the way of your enjoyment of nine moments of glory. As far as your having "lost all respect" for me, frankly I don't really care. For my part, I haven't lost any respect for you, simply because i never had any to begin with.

Oh another thing: you were perfectly happy to let your lies against India stand until Suby came in. If it was a sarcastic joke, you would have told me that because you would not want to harm the reputation of India whether or not I had called you on your error regarding the Caste system. However, the guy who could bust you saw... that was the only thing you cared about. You did not care about harming the reputation of your nation.

Ok you did "address" it but you did nothing but make a statement without any proof to back it up. A statement is not proof. You can think that I am self righteous and all the rest. I know that you are a liar who was going to continue the lie... a lie damaging to your nation. If I was Indian and knew about you spreading that lie, I would consider it defamation and damaging, reinforcing stereotypes about India.
