If you have never seen it I stoirngly recomment the Shawshank Redemption. In fact, even if you have seen it I would advise you to watch it again, it's that good IMHO (and nearly everyone else's who have seen it). There is a reason why it comes in the top5 movies of all time nearly everytime a new survey is done.

Ditto the shawshank redemption.....oh, and Attica

B.H. WilsonThe movie, Air Force One, was filmed partially in the same prison where Shawshank was filmed. (I've been there)

My first choice of Shawshank Redemption has already been thoroughly recommended, so instead I will recommend Dead Man Walking, about a man (Sean Penn) on death row and the nun (Susan Sarandon) who acts as his counsellor/spiritual advisor while he is in prison.

Shawshank Redemption...it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Papillon Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman at their best. "Hey you bastards, I'm still here". Cool Hand Luke - Stars Paul Newman, but the star of the show is George Kennedy with his Oscar winning performance as best supporting actor."WHat we got heear...is a failure to communicate" The Longest Yard The Longest Yard - The 1974 version starring Burt Reynolds, not the 2005 version starring Adam Sandler. "Protect the Quarter Back at all times!" American History X (1983) - Powerful film that tackles racism and hatred head on." Bad Boys (1983) - The version with Sean Penn not the one with Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) - John Frankenheimer direction that features Burt Lancaster as Robert Stroud, a prisoner who was probably the most famous inmate ever to reside on Alcatraz."Warden I'll be good" The Deer Hunter The Deer Hunter (1978) - Robert DeNiro and Christopher Walken in the 5-time Academy Award winner."Didi Mau!" Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) - One of the best war movies as well."Oh What have I done" Midnight Express (1978) - Suggestion - never try to smuggle hash out of Turkey."You mean..in the ass" The Great Escape The Great Escape (1963) - Steve McQueen makes the list again in this 1963 epic that featured an ensemble cast of near heroes."Once outside the wire it is everyman for himself" Dead Man Walking (1995) - Say what you will about Sean Penn, but he's good in this one! The Hurricane (1992) - Another gripping performance by Denzel Washington as Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder My Cousin Vinny (1992) - In case you need more proof that prison movies can be funny. Stars Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei.
-
Brubaker, starring robert redford, circa 1980.
-
Against the Wall. The true story of Attica Not some hollyweird crap told by Oliver Stoned

There have been a number of good prison movies Three of my favorites were The Birdman of Alcatraz; played by Burt Lancaster in 1962. The second was Carbine Williams staring James Stewart in 1952. The third is Papillon staring Steve McQueen in 1973. Oh and a fourth is The Great Escape also staring Steve McQueen in 1963. All are excellent movies and all based on true stories.

Id' say Papillon but it isn't really current anymore but does show the inhumanity of keeping people caged. Midnight Express might be more fitting for foreign prisons. For a different kind of prison, Life is Beautiful and Great Escape.
