Help answer this question below.
Let's start with the divisional playoffs, first.
You know, of course, that the regular-season champions of each of the three divisions and one "wild-card" team are the four teams that qualify for the post-season; this applies to the National League and the American League equally.
The wild card team is automatically seeded #4 in the league's divisional playoffs. That team plays the team with the best won-lost record among the three divisional champions--provided that the two teams are not from the same division. If this applies, the team with the second-best record from among the three divisional champions draws the wild-card team as their first playoff opponent.
No matter how the matches are worked out, the division champions with the best and second-best regular-season records get to host games 1, 2, and 5 if needed. The teams who do not get home field advantage host games 3 and 4 (unless one team sweeps the first three games) of the divisional playoff. The format is thus 2-2-1.
Once the divisional playoffs are done, the two teams that advanced to the league championships series play off. The team that has the better record hosts games 1, 2, 6, and 7 (if 6 and 7 are needed). The opponent of that team hosts games 3, 4, and 5. Thus, the league championship series is 2-3-2.
As for the World Series: The league that won the All-Star Game is rewarded by having its champion host games 1, 2, 6, and 7. Their opponent in the World Series gets to host games 3, 4, and 5. Like the league championship series, the format is 2-3-2.
