Just tell him. Take him aside and let him know that you don't like hugs that much. Make sure you tell him that it's not him, you have no issue with him personally, you just don't like hugs. Make sure to take him aside and say this, so you don't totally humiliate him in front of his friends.
Good luck.
Rather than tell him to stop, you should just go with the hugs. If you're still uncomfortable, perhaps you should find more reclusive friends.
We had a guy in work a few years ago and he wanted to give everyone, male and female, shoulder rubs. He just had to be told straight out to stop doing it.
Ahh I use to have the same problem. Eventually he might get it that your not a hugger and might stop. That worked for me.
Just tell him that I like you, just not the hugs. It's not really my thing. If you really have a need to touch when we meet and part, a fist bump is something I'm more comfortable with. You OK with that?
I am going to take a different view, answering your question.
Suppose this guy just came out of a page on GQ Magazine. would you turn down his hug?
Selective hugging....what happened to equal rights?
just tell him you don't like hugs

You're reading I have a friend that likes to give me hugs. I am not much of a hugger myself and would like him to stop. How do I nicely let him know that I like him, just not the hugs?

I thought it was corny at first, then started laughing. Cute!

Hey! Where can I get one of those things on line. The UK is a den of violence. Not legal to buy in the UK. The politicians, judges and police think they have everything running nicely - NOT!!!!!
by NoWhereMan on October 24th, 2009
You should get something better than that. Have you ever considered tear gas? A can of teargas works great on small crowds of people.
As for things going badly in the UK, at least you don't have a gun problem. Consider the number of violent deaths in the UK versus the number of violent deaths in the US. I'll take yours over mine any day - no questions asked.
by Adz3r0 on October 24th, 2009
Tear gas is banned as well. The UK people cannot carry weapons at all - even for defensive reasons. All weapons found on people are classified in law as 'Offensive Weapons'. You get prosecuted. So the criminals carry knives plus more and more guns because they don't care. Us good guys are defenceless. At least in the States I believe you can carry a firearm for defence, and if not in all States, at least have one in your home. Once again the UK you can't even have a firearm in your home.

You're not allowed to carry unless you're given permission by the gov't, and that's EXTREMELY rare. You'd have to have some sort of connection on a gov't level. As far as I know, we are allowed to carry tear gas - in my state anyway.

Hi Adz3ro. I have a mate who did 3yrs in the French Foreign Legion before deserting. He has taught me some awesome stuff re 'dropping' an opponent quickly and easily in a bad situation. It can't be practiced because it’s too dangerous. But he has used one of the’ tricks' in real life - and so for the first time. He said it was unnerving how effective it was. None of it requires fitness or skill. Suitable for any age. I have never found any of what he taught me on the Internet. Maybe restricted Military Information?
by NoWhereMan on October 25th, 2009
Very. Are you referring to a blood choke?
by Adz3r0 on October 25th, 2009
He hasn't labelled them for me but I think I know the one you mean. The method he used in real life involved a simple and quick move with two open palms which breaks the jaw whilst causing concussion. They drop like a stone.
by NoWhereMan on October 25th, 2009
Does it also involve a kick to the leg? That seems like I'm joking. I'm seriously asking.
by Adz3r0 on October 25th, 2009
No kick to the leg for the one I was talking about although he has shown me leg strikes . It's just double open palm strikes done together. Used when someone is in your face mouthing off or you suspect a head butt coming up. That's the situation he used it for against some scum bag that was out to cause trouble in a bar. My mate isn’t tall so this guy thought he was easy meat. BIG mistake. Despite his 'history' my mate said he had a massive adrenalin rush afterwards, shaking like f***. He said it was because it was a reflex response done without any planning or thought plus the damage it did which he'd never experienced before outside a Forces situation. I don't want to describe this move over A/B for obvious reasons. Could do it by e-mail if you were interested.
