The American Heart Association identifies cardiovascular disease as the leading killer of women. High cholesterol levels contribute to heart disease, so it is important for women to control their cholesterol and keep total levels below 200 mg/dL.
Types
There are two types of cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is "bad." This is the type of cholesterol that adheres to blood vessels and blocks them. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the "good" cholesterol, which sweeps away LDL.
Misconceptions
It is a misconception that all cholesterol levels should be low. The average woman's HDL levels are 50 to 60 mg/dL, but the higher the number, the better. For women, a number below 50 mg/dL is unhealthy.
Considerations
For optimal levels, LDL should measure 100 mg/dL or below. When LDL reaches 160 mg/dL, it is considered high, and 190mg/dL is very high.
Trigylcerides
Total cholesterol levels include triglycerides, which are a form of fat usually measured with cholesterol. Triglycerides should be below 150 mg/dL for optimal health.
Prevention
A low-fat, high-fiber diet and regular exercise are essential to manage cholesterol levels. Omega-3 fatty acids, available in fish and fish oil capsules, are beneficial for lowering LDL while increasing HDL cholesterol.
