The sensor on most such devices is nothing more than a simple spring switch. Two pieces of metal touch; when the printer is closed, a wedge of plastic is forced between them to interrupt the circuit. Inspect the switch; if it's this type, then possibly the plastic nib on the printer cover has broken off, in which case the easy way to "fix" it is simply to defeat it. Push in a piece of paper or cardboard with a q-tip or pen point to hold the metal leaves apart. Note that you are defeating a safety feature by doing this and that it will no longer shut off when opened.
