  I took the test for Mensa India membership and passed. But did not sign up as a member for the same reasons. The people conducting the test appeared to be snobs to me!

• @Suby - I tend to think "some individuals" are just hateful in general and lash out alot --- and if you happen to be of a particular subgroup, that helps focus the hate. I avoid those folks. Life is too short.

• A bigot is "One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ". I don't think that 'virtually' everyone is bigoted, particularly the intolerant aspect as defined by this definition, but Okay, then reply to the other portion of the question about someone who is racist...

• Well that wasn't a nice way to generalise - and it is one thing having a laugh between a group of friends quietly and quite another to make a direct comment like the AB user in that comments trail. I don't feel it strong enough to class as racist but it was definitely insulting!

  For the record, I have worked with a number of Indian colleagues and have always found them easy to have a laugh with.

• You're welcome my friend. Some sweeping generalizations or stereotypes can be quite complimentary though. "The French know how to enjoy life" or "The Germans have the best scientific minds" or anything of that nature. Generalizations only work if they are true and some are simply skewed bilge put forth for the purpose of insulting. I have one for you that you might appreciate.

• The few times while living in Hemet that I had problems with my internet hookup I was "given" to people locally in the United States, then in the Philippines and finally where I had the luck was India! Seriously! When everyone failed me I ended up talking to someome in India and my problem was resolved. This happened two or three times here in Hemet. So my generalization is that computer experts in India are more knowledgeable and do a more thorough job in problem-solving. Are there exceptions to that? Sure. But my experience is what I'm talking about here!

• The boys and girls these days know a thing or two about computers and software and related problem solving. And they are very forthcoming.
  Maybe they don't have a sense of humor, as Mensan would like to put it, but they are helpful.
  My son does voluntary work for Linux-Ubuntu free software development projects in his spare time. So I can understand what you are saying, Rosie.

• The ones who helped solve my problem were very thorough, very patient and kept at it until the problem was solved. The one in the U.S. thought he had "fixed it" and a few minutes later everything was screwed up again. So I called again and they patched me to the philippines and the people were very nice and very patient and kept trying to help but got to a point that it was beyond their expertise and that's when I got handed over to someone in India. This happened at least two times and maybe a third...I don't recall because that happened immediately after we moved here. So maybe the final problemsolvers are found in India...or maybe it was just the problems I had they could help solve.

• Hi Suby. First I say I generally think you and I have similar morals. I always like your answers. In that other question, I believe Mensan would take back his comment if he could. I don't think he meant to offend you, but I see how and why it did. Bigotry is intolerance, not of a race, but of a belief system or opinions of others (such as a religion). If he had really meant it when he said people in India have no sense of humor that would have simply been an ignorant statement, and yes could be considered bigotry. I just don't think he intended to come across like that. He was in a playful mood, had asked a silly question, and made a mistake. I've experienced something similar on AB because, even though I certainly have a sense of humor, some things should not be joked about. I'm offended by some of the things people say about God. I have no ill will toward those who do not believe in God, but those who do not believe write horrible and hateful stuff about those (Continued)

So, in the end, AB has people from all over the world on the site representing many different cultures, traditions, and belief systems. You experience is reminder to me that what may not offend one, may offend others. So we try have to be careful of what we say and try to understand whether our offense to a statement is justified.
  And, when writing rather than talking in person it is easier to miss the real meaning of a statement.
  I hope you do not still feel offended and don't leave AB. Everyone has something important to contribute.

• The point is, Thriftymaid, I can always take a dig on me. But it should be personal. I can laugh at myself, no problems about that. But That should be the limit. The comment should not be extended to include a whole country of people to which I belong. That was the mistake Mensan made. I am sure he regretted it later. But whats the use? Once something is put in writing and can't be deleted, it stays on record forever!

• I know. I'm not arguing with you at all. And, I've come to realize a lot of people on AB live in India, and it seems to be in the southern part like you. My daughter had a friend while at college who was from India. He said his country was so beautiful, but he had never seen sunset in the mountains and thought it was magnificent. That's been years ago but I always remembered it. I was wondering if all of the schools there teach English as a second language.

• Yes, they do, Thriftymaid. All government run schools have English as second language and the local language as the medium of instruction.
  Other schools, mostly privately owned and run, teach it as first language and the medium of instruction will be English in those schools. They too follow the government education department syllabus and the students there too must appear for the board examinations conducted by the government.
