How would you feel if your house was on fire and the fire trucks were busy with a hoax? Not to mention ALL the people put on delays do to the air traffic! And good lord the money WASTED!
Then the fact that he is possibly abusing his whole family! This might have saved their life.
AND, did you know that if anyone is killed rushing to the aide of a hoax they can be charged with manslaughter?

The problem would be that they lied to the police and thus expended a bunch of public money chasing this nonsense. The media are another matter -- they haven't lost anything except a bit of credibility, as this stuff sells and that's what they like.

The crime isn't the hoax so much as it is to waste the public's resources. Quite a bit of money and manpower was spent in the search&rescue for that little boy.

If you were the cops as well as people in the media frantically getting a message out, wouldn't you be pissed off? You can't just play games with other people's lives just because you want a TV series.

If the allegations hold, then it was not simply a matter of duping the media. Valuable public safety resources were applied in any possible attempt to recover the boy safely. Those resources are expensive in terms of personnel hours and equipment hours. Those resources are also finite. While cops and EMTs were busy with the hoax, another real crisis could have happened and the response been delayed.

The problem with this hoax is they used a child( which can be called child abuse, child endangerment,child neglect)even if they had the balloon in complete control they SAID the child was in danger.They also tied up air space which belongs to the federal government, the airport had to stop all flights and turn planes away while the authorities gained control of the balloon.

I say they should of had infrared goggles to see inside the balloon in the begining and if nothing shoot the ballon down and search the house........wait up they should of seaarched the house in the first place.....

You're reading Why is it a crime to pull off a hoax, as in the Balloon Boy hoax? Just because the Media made complete asses of themselves? There are thousands of hoaxes of UFOs, bigfoot, etc, and none of them were prosecuted. If you punk the media, then it's jail time?
