The only things that YOU (the generic you) can do to protect yourself against discrimination is know the law, rules at work, etc. and be willing to fight for your rights.
Other than that, the BIG thing is to know that it is going to happen, not let it beat you down, and carry on when it happens. In most cases you cannot actually do anything to stop the discrimination so do not let it turn you into a hater or stop you from continuing to try.
How is it like having to deal with racism? I have never dealt with it but grew up in a racist family,
