It's essentially using Google or Yahoo to search for a specific term, like: "I'm googling how to karate chop dwarves" is just another way of saying that you're using the search engine to find out how to karate chop dwarves.

both are called search engines.
Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com/
Google: http://www.google.com/
Basically, both sites have some special software that runs around on the internet and collects information from web pages. that information is put into a database and by going to the websites above, you can search their databases for anything you looking for.
