The liver is a vital organ present in vertebrates and some other animals. It has a wide range of functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. The liver is necessary for survival. There is currently no way to compensate for the absence of liver function.

Some of the functions are: to produce substances that break down fats, convert glucose to glycogen, produce urea, make certain amino acids, filter harmful substances from the blood, storage of vitamins and minerals and maintain a proper level or glucose in the blood. The liver is also responsible for producing cholesterol and also bile, which aids in digestion because it emulsifies lipids
