Help answer this question below.
I'll sometimes do it to let a friend know I was there. +5
It is just to show that I approve of their answer.
I totally agree with you Keysha. I do not see any reason for stating that you are giving the question points. It is in my opinion like asking people to reciprocate, like getting around the asking for points rules..
It has become very popular this year and I realise that a lot of the newer members do not realise that it has never been the done thing to do. Now it has become very common even older users have started to pander to the popularity vote because they are afraid people think they are not giving points.
I know people say that they are showing appreciation , The points appear on my activities page I do not need constant reminders..Some of the people that say they give you points do not anyway. JMHO Unpopular these days but I will not play the popularity game.
Just to let them know that the points were from me.
But usually, I leave a real comment in this case. Or no comment at all.
As to "filling" the comment thread, it is practically impossible to fill it. You can write as many comments as you like (this has already been done).
On the question view, the comments are shown in abridged form, except for the comment thread that you are just showing at that moment ("show all comments").
Adding a +# to an answer doesnt give you any points, I think it is for the attention.
When the person asking the question has no point's after several have answered.. I let them know I was at least the one that gave them some...
I don't do that. +5
When I give a points swipe without an answer its for 1 of 2 reasons. #1 I think my answer is right, but I just dont want to have to fight for it. #2 I think my answer is right but I just dont want to have to fight for it!
No I never do that. +4
Why worry about it?

No, I rarely announce that I'm giving points. Negging, maybe. It's been a long time.

Hell Yeah
Are the answers you give actually helpful?

How often do you ask a question about a specific thing and receive some responses that are perfect(aarrgghh!) examples of it? Useful?

You're reading When you points answers in a question, why would you say + whatever and nothing else? Is it to get attention? You do know it fills the comments section of those that ask the question, don't you?

I can see doing it for one or two, but if you run through the answers in a question and points them all, to do that to them all?
by Keysha on October 20th, 2009
No, that seems rather senseless.
