The m Reg for a car in the UK would be registered anywhere from August 1, 1994 to July 31, 1995. The car can be a 1994 or a 1995 if it is a Prefix registration, which means the marks are listed as three numbers and then three letters.Source

"M" suffix(last letter) August '73 to July '74
"M" prefix (first letter) August '94 to July '95

As you see Melanie has provided one answer but if you are talking about a much older registration number then M would mean it was registered between The 1st of August 1973 and 31st of July 1974.
The best way to find out a cars age is to look at the log book, some "m" reg cars may not be as it may be a personalised reg.

"Professionally Researched" answers are often incomplete and unsatisfactory, but that doesn't stop them from automatically being called "Great Answers". I'm sure that the people who write them don't even see other answers and comments. They are all just copy and pasted answers, often on subjects the person knows absolutely nothing about.

Yes I've come to that conclusion too Brian.There was one I answered yesterday about metres...a great,pro researched, answer by one of the AB staff was a load of poppycock.Even the question ,again by AB staff was ambiguous....
