gold injections were in the past the standard of care in treating moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. As newer treatments have become available with superior benefit and less risk.

There is evidence that gold injections have placed some patients into permanent remission.

The reasons for using Gold sodium thiolamate (the compound in the "gold injection"), as with any drug, are dependent upon the effectiveness of the drug in treatment, contrasted with alternative treatments and the risks associated with side-effects.

Considering that gold, along with lead, mercury, and the other heavy metals, is toxic--especially cumulatively--and the treatment is continuous, my best guess is that a safer and/or more effective treatment is available.

It is common practice however for outdated treatments to remain available to doctors in cases where the latest and safest treatment is ineffective. If you've tried other treatments and still find the gold injection to be the best option for you, I'm sure you could find a doctor who is willing to do it.

    hope that helps
