Help answer this question below.

Are reality shows (Big Brother, American Idol etc) evidence we are living in a lowest common denominater world? These shows seem ever more prevelant, and people talk about them at work, as if they are important, when its basically "Chumbucket TV"

Hi steelhamster, I'm prowling old questions because the new ones seem too frivolous lately. I admit that I watch some of the offensive shows. I fought it for years; but, my husband watches them, so I started watching, too. While I agree that they are trash and are lowering the standards of tv-dom; I can see what makes them so popular. It's fun to root for your favorites. It's like watching sports. You can cheer for the home team without bothering to learn the rules of a particular sport or game. It's like sports for dummies. I watch a lot of History Channel and good shows like Monk to balance out the junk I watch. It's like eating a salad for lunch so you can have cake at supper. lol It's a really good question by the way.

I agree. In my opinion it just displays what a low form of entertainment TV is. With no new ideas for half decent programmes we have to resort to watching people deliberately acting to try and win the public's attention. It's quite sad to watch really

You may have a point, but there's no denying their popularity and their abilities, not only to make tons of money, but, as you say, people are talking about it at work, etc - that's fantastic that they have something neutral to talk about as opposed to war, poverty, gas prices, blah, blah, blah! Let the people have some excitement!
