I don't know about need.
But I think you should speak as many as you can, really. Then again, I can only speak English and bad French.
But give me time. Aha.
I do think that whenever you go to another country, it's only polite to learn enough to get by though. I can ask for alcohol in a number of languages. I'm proud of that :)
People don't NEED to know any, but I like three. One romance, one tone based, and one non-verbal. I think it builds character. +2
One. Because I never intend to travel to a foreign country. I went to Canada, and they speak English, and I went to Mexico and hated it so much I'll never go back. Anywhere else costs too much to get to.
Since language is essentially a communication tool, I'd say as many as you need to know to be able to function, interact and participate in your community and work situation...but at least two.
Around here spanish and english
I need to speak two languages - English and Spanish, because I am English and I live in Spain.
As a matter of "need" I think one(English) is sufficient; however, I love languages, and I wish I could speak as many as possible.
You need to know English and your country's native language. If English is your country's native language then you only need to know one -- otherwise two.
