I'm very opposed to positive thinking, and have posted many harsh criticisms of it.

I'm also opposed to NEGATIVE thinking, though.

Basically, I think it's a major mistake to try to deal with life by manipulating one's thoughts. A much better approach is to work at being AWARE of negative thoughts and challenging them -- this puts you back in touch with reality, rather than applying a layer of artificial and shallow "positivity" on top of what is. The goal is to be connected to what's real, not to insulate yourself with more automated behavior patterns and phony beliefs.

Positive thinking is like candy-coating a rotten apple: it's only sweet until you bite.

To a certain extent. You have to BELIEVE what your saying (to yourself) in order for it to change your life in any way. You can say "affirmations" and "positive things" all day and night long, but if you don't have faith and belief in those words, your going nowhere.

I think it does. Being optimistic may increase your life span and may give you the strength and leadership that may be lacking.

I believe that positive thinking, coupled with action towards a goal will improve one's quality of life. When we have more of what we want out of life then we can help others by example. It has worked for me.

Negativity is a huge energy drain. It's a vampire sucking you dry, of life. Positive thoughts are dynamic and alive, they give you more energy than you had. They give you hope for the future, bot illogical fanciful positive thughts but just an attitude. There is a big difference to the brain when you say Do this, compared to Don't do that. Do this is a motivation, not a restriction. DO this is a goal, leading you onward. Youcan feel it if youhave ever been around a negative person. You feel yourself being drained, more tired, even depressed if there long enough. THe cure is getting away from them and fiding someone positive who actually gives off energy, a healing. That can only improve your life.

"We become what we think about"

Everything we are is a resort of how we have thought. So if you want to change the direction of your life you must change how you think.

    Interesting question.

I notice you said thinking, but usually our thoughts come alive in to our words and actions. So I have taken this into account.

No doubt positive thinking can improve your relationships. Who wants to be around some one who's miserable all the time?
It can create opportunities, such as in your career. You will appear enthusiastic and interested. This can open doors.
You could say that a genuine positive outlook could self motivate you, leading to a good quality of life in all that you do.

I have to ask myself, can anyone have such a genuine positive outlook?

Natural disasters, drought, famine, war, debt, death, hurt, sorrow etc. no matter whether you think positive or negative, these things affect us all.
Is positive thinking really just a distraction from the things we don't want to focus on? Can we not face reality?

What do you think on it, Bluerose? : )

I'm not sure about positive thinking, but I've heard that studies show a relationship between smiling and feeling better about life. You may be thinking, "Well duh, when I feel good about life, I smile!" But recent experiments have shown that it works in reverse as well. If you smile, the muscles used are connected with a "feel-good" device, and it can make you happier in dire circumstances.

Without a doubt. If you make an effort to stay positive, and set little goals for yourself, you'll get a lot more done and feel a lot happier. Sometimes its just deciding not to make a fuss over something, or wearing a smile instead of a frown. You have a decision over how something is going to affect you, and theres always the optiion to smile and make a bad situation better.

Absolutely, it's not a secret. Every time I've spent energy on envisioning success, I've gotten it. Part of that is prayer, part of that is asking people for good thoughts, and part of it may be something else I don't understand. This isn't a new idea, but for me, it works.

I do believe what we think does affect the quality of one's life. If you are always reinforcing the positive then you are always in a positive state of mind.Things do not get to you and stress you so much.

It sure does. A while ago I tested it out and it certainly works.at times I found it hard to keep going being positive, and really struggled. but the moment you go back to being positive just things get better unexpectedly.
