We would stay in the hotel downtown that was converted from the old train station. Go to a couple of good restaurants and explore downtown; maybe go to the botanical gardens on the other side of the river.

same thing I do everytime we go there (and we go there on average 3-5 times a year) we have relatives there, we stay with them :)

i investigate sights. if nothing outweighs driving to springfield, illinois, i'd have to see lincoln's old house, law office, and tomb.
