You should definitely correct the error. Everyone makes mistakes and people are more understanding then we may think. Plus it'll give you an excuse to contact them without seeming obsessive.
I would correct the mistake by doing it again.

You're reading I sent over the wrong cover letter to a job that I really want. Would there be any point to sending over the correct cover letter, or should I just forget about it? ... It wasn't just a form letter. It was personalized, but I attached the wrong file.

Someone told me that it would show that I'm not detail oriented, and that the job wasn't important enough to double check my work. That's all they will remember. Sending something else will just make it a bigger joke in their office.

But what does not correcting it say about you???? Like I said before, everyone makes mistakes and even if you may be remembered as the person who "screwed up but fixed the mistake" the fact is you will be remembered. No one is perfect and the fact you tried to fix a mistake says more than being complacent and not doing anything about it. Fact is,the mistake is done, what you do to correct it is what will define you. Who would you hire.. the guy who messed up and hopes it's just overlooked or the guy who has the guts to correct it?
