Social Security and U.S. census records are sketchy at best before 1920. Besides Ancestry.com, what other organizations could someone get information on someone from before 1920?

Online, there are a few. http://www.usgenweb.org has some, as do many other genealogical sites.

Offline, go to the county in question (from the Census or SSDeath records) and go to the courthouse and/or health department. There may be records there. Marriage, will, divorce, death, birth, etc.

You can log onto iconn.org as a guest.

Click on iconn resources and when a new screen appears, click on HeritageQuest. Once you get into HQ, you can search the federal censuses and download as many as you want for free.

Absolutely agree with Mr M. About the best place for genealogy information is your local genealogy library from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints.

They have almost 5000 libraries around the world.

They are usually staffed with very helpful volunteers (surprisingly, many (most?)of the volunteers are genealogy buffs who are not members of that church- so don't worry about them trying to convert you).

Most of the libraries have free web access to lots of genealogy websites that usually require paid subscriptions.

Best of all, all of their libraries are FREE. Can't get better than that.

To find one near you, go to:
