What kind of people instill the most confidence in you....those who are calm, soft-spoken, choose their words carefully and are in control or those who are impassioned, pumped up and use words casually, even promiscuously?

those who have sacrificed a great deal for what they believe in and do so without fanfare or expectation of some reward, praise or obligation

- sorry Rosie, i did not understand your first sentence at all, if you could reword it i'd appreciate it. What preference are you talking about and what former mode of communication? Are you talking about this particular answer or are you referring to some other answer i gave, thanks :)

  Do you believe soft-spoken, calm people more or less than you believe those who are loud and sometimes angry/upset/accusatory?
  
  I think if someone has a logical,rational,sensible,valid point to make, stating it calmly should suffice. It's those who don't really have anything to say that get out of control, angry, accusatory and sometimes insulting. I don't know if I clarified it or made things worse. Happy Tuesday mal! :)

- sorry Rosie, it's all my fault, lol. I was thinking outside the box again, in my own dream world i imagine. So, let me start over again and stay inside the box. If i fail, well, at least i tried. I'm looking to my younger years for this one so i'm going with the soft spoken sort who did instill confidence in me as a young girl growing up.

Using the word "promiscuously" for the ppl that throw words around is an AWESOME description. As a writer, I applaud you on this.

As for the question. Both kinds of ppl play in important role. Passionate ppl are good for immediate motivation. But the gentle ppl are good for long-term gratification. The passionate guys give the listener a jump-start, while the gentle ones keep the listener going.

Being an Army officer, I've mostly seen the latter type.It never ceases to amaze me when someone is effective as the former type. There's a certain "magic" with that type;my lady Meghan is one of them.In a military situation, the latter type inspires confidence. In my personal life,Meg's quiet confidence inspires my love and gratitude. +5 Rosie

- Everyone I love is exactly that way....calm, low-key and logical. Among all of us I'm the one that can get kinda "impassioned" but I save it for the TV and I vent when I am swearing at the politicians! I think if what you have to say is meaningful, you don't need to shout/stomp/pound/insult/terrorize. Thank you for your answer m'dear! :)

We should be careful with both the extremes you describe.
Both could be dangerous.
Those who can hide their emotions could be as dangerous as those who have no control over their emotions.
I will have more confidence in people like me, ordinary people, who fall somewhere midway between the extremes.

Actually styles of talking don't usually instill any confidence in me by themselves. The words and the person's track record matter.

I am the impassioned type, I wouldn't say pumped up though :) and it bothers me when people pay more attention to someone who speaks calmly but is not stating anything intelligent or reliable and I KNOW he/she is full of it.

So this made me long time ago not trust any particular "delivery style" (not even the impassioned one, some people can hyde incompetence behind their passion just as well) and I try to get beyond that.

- Thank you for your answer AnaRoM and Happy Saturday. I tune out the shouters. My feeling is this...if you have something reasonable/rational/sensible/logical to say you will say it calmly and not feel the need to yell/stomp/shout/insult. Different strokes....:)

- hey I don't shout and insult:) I thought impassioned meaned something like speaking a lot to make your point, sometimes in a bit shoking manner and gesturing a lot.

- It can be as you think of course. But low-key, calm and on-point works better for/with me. Once emotions get entangled in things (and impassioned is always emotional) the lucidity/clarity of thought sometimes is diminished. Happy Sunday to you! :)

That's a really interesting question for me. I think both types have opportunity for abuse. I've been particularly vulnerable, in the past, to impassioned, pumped up salesmen offering used cars, business opportunities, religion, and everything in between. At the same time, the calm, soft-spoken person may use his carefully chosen words to deceive, too.
All-in-all, though, I think I'd more easily trust the soft-spoken person, with this in mind: it just may be that the most trustworthy speaker may be the one who becomes impassioned over a subject about which he usually remains calm and collected.

That depends on the person. I don't blindly trust all quiet people and I don't fully distrust all loud people.
