Adding chicory to coffee when then prices went up and using Carnation powdered milk with water, that stuff was terrible.

They would put money in the pockets of a calendar so they would have something set aside when bills came due. Also, they had a Christmas Club account where savings for Christmas was deducted from my dad's paycheck.

My dad traveled alot. He would bring home the sugar packets from his coffee orders (he liked it black) and mom would add them to the sugar bowl. Note: He did not take them from table settings like in diners.
My mom used coupons, alot. And she stocked up on things when they were cheap or in season. There were always fresh frozen sliced peaches or strawberries in the freezer.

Share bathwater. Keep grain products so long we had to pick things out. Eat fish, nuts and berries we could catch or pick up. Never fill up the car with gas. Hand me down clothes. Off brand clothes. Limited eating out-if course in those days there wasn't much choice. We were well edcuated people in a small city. Father was a college professor. We never wanted but the folks were close enough to the depression where frugality was something we lived with.

I guess we could rephrase the question as "to avoid spending money"

My mom was a coupon collector from hell. I remember I used to hate going to the store with her because everyone behind us in line would give dirty looks.lol But hey she was a single mother and worked three jobs at one point, she did a great job for me and my sister. +3

Not spend the money on dinners out (only in special occasions). Take the bus back from school. They inculcated my brothers and I to have a savings account (piggy bank), they also taught us that "sharing is caring".

When growing up we went to the devaluation of my currency and some tough years followed it. Then the economy was fixed and there was a surplus of money. But the good old tips and habits have never been forgotten.
