When you are in a strange town and ready for dinner, do you look for a chain restaurant you know of or do you ask for the name of a good locally owned restaurant?

I usually ask someone unless I'm just driving through -- then I'll stop at a chain unless I see something that looks more interesting.

i look for the nonchain with the most cars in the parking lot . no cars = bad food

Depends upon how much of a hurry I'm in, and on whether it's raining or not. : )

When I was in Puerto Rico on a military maneuver and my co-workers wanted to stop at McDonalds, I objected fiercely. I told them I could eat a McDonalds anytime. I wanted to sample the local cuisine. However, I was outvoted. BTW, they had Pork McNuggets at the Ponce McDonalds. Of course I had a 20 piece.
