I would not want to live without one, would you? They are paid what society will accept because we cannot function without them. And, they do great work.

Solely depends on the Market staus and the revenue of the company they are an employee of and the nature of work they do.In my company and even in my project I've people who have the same qualification and same experience level,but their capabilities to handle certain jobs differ and so does their pay packages.They know it and they accept it as good engineers accept their shortcomings without wasting time on worthless debates of ego.
