Cause every car would cost an astronomical amount of money & nobody could afford one.
-
because its much too cost prohibitive to install a $5,000 restraint system rather than a $50 seatbelt
-
Because ordinary drivers don't usually drive at the speeds race car drivers go at. Also, they practice special skills to help them keep a car under control and their reaction times are slightly faster.
-
Because us normal people don't have sponsors to pay for it.
-
All of us who want to pay to have it installed do. I guess you probably don't want such a system yourself despite your question if you actually had to pay for it. Be realistic. Don't think about government intervention in your day to day life, think about how you should be spending your own money.

race car drivers have life insurance companies that have a lot of money at stake if these guys die...that's not the case for most of us...they probably require the safety systems
-
NO ONE is stopping any of us from wearing CRASH Helments if we so desire ... it is a CHOICE "Not To" by most of us .. +5

How do you think cars got side view mirrors and seat belts? The safety things that are learned from auto racing (especially formula1) sooner or latter is incorporated into regular cars. Unfortunately, thee things take a long time.
-
If you have a chance, look inside a race car. they have the safety equipment, but there is no room for you or your family. No one would be able to afford such a vehicle, because of the cost. and, the gas mileage is unthinkable.

1. People want to use the same clothing in and out of their car. The specialised clothing used in racing is hell to put on, covers most of your face, and makes going to the toilet a nightmare. 2. The cockpit is designed to break away from the car and cocoon the driver - but that's because there's only one person in the car, and the cockpit is designed to fit very snugly around him/her. It's much more difficult to do that with a 4-seater. 3. Some of the systems intentionally weaken the car in order to give more protection to the driver. This often means that even a small collision will ruin the car. However there ARE safety systems that were introduced into street cars from racing cars, such as roll bars.

It would be very expensive and not everyone would be able to afford it.
