Originally Catholic priests COULD marry. But it was decided (around 4th century A.D.)that they not because the church didn't want the priests attentions and (moreso) wealth, leaving the church via heirs.

    It's always about money.

The 'real' reason? Paul, who wrote several of the books of the Bible, reeeeeeeeeally didn't like sex. Kind of obsessed with it, really.

Per 1 Corinthians 6:27-28 "Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned."

Marriage is permitted, but it's a second-best option because, the theory goes, marriage distracts from devoting your full attention to Christ. The only reason you should marry is because "it is better to marry than to burn" (1 Cor 7:9)

That's the official reasoning, at least.

I love a good conspiracy so first of all I would love to know what the "fake" reason is.

Because the catholic church changes the bits in the bible that they don't like, to suit themselves. It is non biblical. God does not forbid ANY MAN to marry.

I thought the practice began so that the priests could serve the Lord exclusively, irrespective of family obligations.

However, I think that priests should be unable to marry honorably if they so choose.

The reasons people (and the Catholic Church) give about what the Bible or God says is just rationalization. The real reason is clearly ECONOMICS and POWER. If priests marry, then they have wives and children to support, which costs considerably more money that the western Catholic Church has to provide. Also, as mentioned, there is the issue of inheritance of land or other assets that priests might have. Whether celibacy is a requirement or "voluntary", the Church retains control of the finances and has more money than it otherwise would have to spend in other areas, such as real estate. The same issue and reason is also the case for nuns, who traditionally provide cheap labor as teachers, nurses and domestic housekeepers for priests and bishops who, of course, have no wives to provide household functions. Thus, celibacy provides the Catholic Church with a tremendous economic advantage compared to other religious factions which, in turn, gives the church more power and influence and better chance of survival.

Just my opinion but as far as I can see the catholic faith deeply resented women because sex was seen as wrong and even within marriage although then begrudgingly accepted was still seen as something shameful to not enjoy too much ;). True men of god couldn't have such a distraction from their faith.

Its a medieval throwback from the time women were burned as witches for being too beautiful (hence the expression bewitching/enchanting etc) and sex was evil therefore so were women because they tempt.

I don't think they think that way anymore but that was the foundations of this tradition.

Priests choose not to marry because they feel a faith that's so profound they want to try to give up all human love to serve Him more fully. Paul understood it, he speaks of this kind of calling in Scripture. Most of you harp on it because you don't understand that kind of calling --you don't have this kind of profound faith. So you wish to tear down those who do.

Celibacy is the priesthood is also a custom, something that can be changed if enough priests desire it. For 1700 years, it hasn't been important enough for them to want to change it.

Because it is a catholic condition, if they want to be a priest.
