When the mormons used to have their converts swear to avenge the blood of joseph smith, was this against the U.S. government or against all non-mormons?

    Prayers for justice that are directed to the Judge of Heaven and Earth, Jesus Christ, are standard operating procedure for Christians. After all, the Lord is going to make the judgment.

    "Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies: And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellers as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city. Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness." [Isaiah 1:24-27]

    Since the U.S. is under the Judge of Heaven and Earth (see the Declaration of Independence), anyone who prays to Jesus to remove the oppressor is about as American as it gets. We answer to the King of Heaven and Earth; those who won't shouldn't complain when their own evil comes back upon their heads.

    To my knowlege as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Members were never asked to swear to avenge the blood of Joseph Smith. If they did, it was in direct oppisistion of the stance that the church took after the martyrdom.
