How do I stop a particular Word file from always opening in 120% magnification? I've tried saving it in 100%, but it doesn't help.

OK, I know what you're talking about, and it's a royal pain in the *ss. Irritating, but not serious.

I use Word 2003, so I don't know how this will work on 2007.

According to Microsoft Office Online:

"You can't set a default for all documents that you view in Word, because the view setting is stored with each individual document as a document property. You can save your document in the view with which you want it to open. Documents that you receive from others will open with the view in which they were previously saved."

Which means if you set the file parameters the way YOU want them, then when you save it, it should open that way.

BUT WAIT! IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!

As you've said, even when you save the file with the new settings, it will STILL open up the same way! I think the key is in the last sentance of the above quote.

Anyway, I experimented on one of my own documents that has always opened up in the web layout, no matter how many times I tried saving it in the print layout. And this is the result:

Let's call your troublesome file name "DOCUMENT" for this example.

Open DOCUMENT. Change the file view to the format you like under the "View" tab. (I prefer Print Layout). Then, set the file size to whatever you prefer (100% in your case).

Now, save this as "DOCUMENT 1".

Close the file just like you would normally and then open "DOCUMENT 1". It should open up just the way you saved it.

If it does, then go back and delete your original file (DOCUMENT) and then rename "DOCUMENT 1" as "DOCUMENT".

It seems if you resave the file under another file name, your new settings will be saved along with it.

Why? Beats the heck outta me. It might not be a problem with later versions of Word. If it is, feed it back to Microsoft so they can work on it for later versions.

Hope this helps!

I've had so much trouble with this that I've come to the conclusion that word has a "random size" feature. Sometimes a file will open in the previous file's sizing, rarely will a file open in the size (other than 100%) it was last used in. It doesn't happen too often to cause me any grief but it would be nice to get some control over it.

This happens to me sometimes at work. Why I don't know. I think it sorts itself out when you re-start the computer.

Thanks for your help +5 but unfortunately re-starting doesn't work! This is a file I received as an e-mail attachment, a form I have to occasionally fill out and return to my employer. It's been on there for more than a year, so I've re-started the computer countless times, and I've tried saving it at 100%, and it always opens up at 120%. I know it's hardly important, but it's a pet peeve of mine I guess.

I know a PDF file can be created like that and therefore you can't change the magnification..but you said this was a Word file. I don't know if a Word file can be created at a specific magnification. I'll keep watching this question cos I'd like to know myself. Hopefully someone who knows will answer.

Yeah it is Word. Thanks Marky, I hope someone knows the answer too! :)
