Aren't 'Bratz' dolls basically teaching girls at a young age to become shallow mindless sluts?

Plastic toys = plastic kids, perhaps.

Those horrid things will not enter my home.

I am a toy snob, as it is.

so what do u let ur kids play with.. and if u don't have kids what will you let them play with?
Avatar Nom de guerre Mar, 23 2007 at 07:42 PM
Mine are 2 and 3. We have basic stuff - colorful wooden blocks, big cardboard blocks, lots of art supplies (paint, play doh, crayons), insane quantities of books, brio/Thomas wooden trains and tracks, baby dolls, wooden puzzles, a play kitchen, die-cast cars, Mr. Potato Head...
They don't watch much TV, so they're not too familiar with most licensed characters and toys. I'm not sure how long that will last, but I like it for now!

Only if said girl follows the teachings of a doll :) Hopefully she has her own sense of who she is and cares not to emulate a plastic toy. I had Barbie dolls and I can honestly say that I was never inclined to be tan, blonde, large breasted, drive a pink car, and date a guy named Ken.

When I was younger, I seriously remember hoping that I *wouldn't* look like a Barbie when I got older, mainly because it was so hard to get pants to fit on them haha. But I loved playing with them.

Am I missing something here? Since when do Bratz dolls encourage "sex before marriage, at an early age"? They may not conform to some people's ideals as far as the way they are dressed, but I personally do not think the outfits are any worse than some things that Barbie has worn over the years. I have read the books to my four-year-old daughter many times, and I can't say I remember ANY mention of sex, casual or otherwise. In fact, I believe that the most recent one I read had a story of four girls who went to the beach, and helped other people they met on the beach. They also worked out a dispute between the four of them in a manner that suggested they were upright and wholesome young women. No casual sex. No sluttiness. And not a bit shallow. I believe you are letting your own moral standards for the way a young woman should dress or whether she should wear makeup influence your view. And, by the way, for you to suggest that any woman could be a "slut" based upon what they are learning from a doll, seems like a very shallow and chauvinistic standard.

Thanks weezypops. I sympathize with the plight of bullet's niece, but whoever now has responsibility for her upbringing should be assisting her with making informed decisions. What I have read under this question seems an awful lot like those who blame music, television or video-games for violence in our society. It is the parents' (or guardians') responsibility to ensure that their children know right from wrong...not a doll manufacturer's.

How about Bratz dolls "Secret date" edition? In which a boy was hiding behind a door?! Or how about Champagne bottles and glasses being sold with the dolls? Isn't That in itself a little much?
Avatar AntigoneRising Aug, 24 2007 at 06:07 AM
No, I don't think so.

Believe it or not, they've been around for years and years. Adults don't like them and see them differently from kids. At the end of the day, they do not have the ability to teach anybody anything - they are lumps of moulded plastic - and when I last checked, they could not have sex of any way, shape or form. They also lack a brain inside the head which means they are not good at instruction.

Let's remember they are not real little people - they are dolls, that do sod all.

Indeed!
Avatar Mini_kilt Jul, 04 2007 at 08:39 AM
If by years and years you mean since 2001, you are right. And you're also right about the fact that they can't have sex, but teaching girls about "Secret dates" in which they have to hide the fact they are sneaking out for a date is pretty shady. I also don't agree with champagne bottles and glasses being an accessory for a pre-teen marketed doll.

No. What does fashion - even skimpy fashion - have to do with sexual activity? How is the fashion any skimpier than Barbie with the 44DD chest? Finally, I strongly disagree with the word "slut" and its connotations. It is a sexist judgment made on females for behavior that is considered perfectly acceptable in males.

Personally, I wouldn't want anything around my daughters (or my sister) that teaches traditional, sexist attitudes towards sexuality or gender. Keep it away - far away.

I agree +5. I do wonder why it is that a guy can sleep around and be as promiscuos as he likes and his buddies will cheer him on... society fosters the behavior...... but if a girl does it.... OMGs! She is such a whore or a slut...... she's cut down and shunned for it...... double standards suck.... What's the purpose?
Avatar AntigoneRising Oct, 10 2007 at 11:45 PM
The purpose is to control female sexual behavior, ensure strict ownership of her sexuality by a single male, and ensure paternity. Meanwhile, guys can go around having sex with whomever they choose as often as they choose.

msFortunate : perhaps I'm missing something, but how do they promote teen pregnancy or casual sex?
Avatar AshleyMarie May, 15 2007 at 07:01 PM
i can understand the pregnancy part because they came out with the barbies who are pregnant.
Avatar Tranny May, 28 2007 at 07:03 PM

It is beyond me how a normal rational and sensible minded parent could credit a doll with their childs possible future behaviour patterns.
I believe a child to be more influenced by regular and continual parental guidance as opposed to the influence of a raggy haired doll that their child may have played with on a few occassions several years ago and I would seriously wonder at the intelligence of anyone who could honestly give credit or lay blame for the same on a doll.
