  • Yes. If you started your computer from scratch you'll have erased your sound driver. You need to go to your computer manufacturer's website and download the correct sound driver for your system.
  • When you said you checked your connections, do you mean both inside and outside the machine? If you are not using the audio connectors on the motherboard, it's possible you dislodged the audio cable inside the PC leading to the external jack. The connectors for these cables are rather flimsy, 2-pin jobs that are easy to disconnect accidentally. Another possibility is that if you reinstalled the OS completely, you may need to download and install the audio drivers for your motherboard. Quite frequently the sound will not work without these drivers. They should be on the CD that came with the motherboard. If you bought a Dell or other pre-built PC, you can probably just go to their web site and download them there. Good luck.
  • Simply adding an additional drive should have no effect whatsoever. Chances are that something else is the problem - perhaps you nudged the sound card loose when installing the drive?
