I used to find it difficult to be assertive in business dealings with men, but that only lasted until I was about 25 and realized if I was going to get anything done I would have to be more assertive. I'm an independent person and don't like to rely on anyone else to do things for me. This means I had to learn to make my case by myself, no matter who I dealt with. I learned that it was always best to be prepared - well informed, able to substantiate anything I said, and calm.

I used to, until I started building homes. Actually, the first few months of the first home, I was having trouble. It was really more about conditioning. I had never really had to be assertive on a BIG scale up until that point. It didn't take me long to realize that it was my money building that home, and the outcome of the quality was a direct reflection of me. Once that became the focus, rather than the fact I was dealing with men, everything else fell into place. And I am happy to say, I must be doing something right. I have many key subcontractors who enjoy working with me. And I very much enjoy working with them.
