    Raja Ram Mohan Roy was one of the first people who started working against social evils like sati, dowry etc. Though others were working at the same time towards the same issues, his influence was more on the society, owing to being a ruler of a territory. He is hence called "The Pioneer of Modern India" Also refer http://www.iloveindia.com/indian-heroes/raja-ram-mohan-roy.html Some also consider Swami Vivekananda to be maker of modern India. However, Raja Ram Mohan Roy's period was well before Vivekananda's times, so that he can be considered to be the pioneer.
