  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) monitors the frequency of Shigella infections in the country, and assists local and State health departments to investigate outbreaks, determine means of transmission and devise control measures. CDC also conducts research to better understand how to identify and treat shigellosis. The Food and Drug Administration inspects imported foods, and promotes better food preparation techniques in restaurants and food processing plants. The Environmental Protection Agency regulates and monitors the safety of our drinking water supplies. The government has also maintained active research into the development of a Shigella vaccine. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/shigellosis_g.htm#What%20can%20a%20person%20do%20to%20prevent%20this%20illness
  • I can't imagine that they are doing much at all. It is not a very significant problem here in the US. I don't see our government forking over any real money to do something about it in other countries, either. I think it will be up to individuals to do something about this kind of problem; like donating to charities that provide people with water purifying products and supplies such as pumps to get better water to drink.
  • Please hold while the magnificent Carnac takes a stab at this one: I predict they'll be paying Big Pharm to come up with a vaccine that will 1) prevent some cases of this not-horrendously-threatening-to-our-nation disease, 2) cause other problems in many children (for which the government will make sure the company is not held responsible, even if it's proven that they KNEW about these risks and didn't disclose them to parents), and 3) make big money for its manufacturer when the government starts "requiring" that all children be vaccinated. This will help to keep the masses in a low level state of fear accompanied by a sense of being well-protected by big daddy gubment, as well as funnel tons of money back to big pharma and Die Health Kare Industrie companies that write big checks to political campaigns - because most parents will be bullied into giving up their rights to decide what medical treatment their children receive. Gee, wouldn't it be eerie if my wild guess came true??
