  • Tracing and recording are two very different things. I don't think you'll find much in the way of real research that's free, but there are some fine sites that are free for recording what you already know. . http://www.familysearch.org http://www.myfamily.com http://www.myheritage.com . Just three good sites for recording your tree and they're all FREE
  • www.familysearch.org has a lot of information online, and everything they have is for free. If you want access to even more and help from very knowledgeable people, the best place to go for genealogy information is your local genealogy library from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. They have almost 5000 (five thousand, no kidding) libraries around the world. They are usually staffed with very helpful volunteers Surprisingly, many (most?)of the volunteers are genealogy buffs who are not members of that church- so don't worry about them trying to convert you. Most of the libraries have free web access to lots of genealogy websites that usually require paid subscriptions. I can't remember for sure whether Ancestry.com is one, but I think it is (the library has a master subscriptions to lots of sites you can use for free on their computers.) Best of all, all of their libraries are FREE. Can't get better than that. To find a library near you, go to: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp
  • If you need to do this free of charge, chances are your family comes from a long line of dead beats. +5.
  • try your local archives and familysearch.org
