I also think that the IRA is more for negotiations as for a military action.
The time of military actions by the forces of the IRA seems to be over at the moment. The political goals of the IRA and muslim terror groups are too different so that I hardly could imagine that there is a real cooperation. This could only be if both groups would have a common enemy.
Okay, Frederik, just one more Question - If Hezbollah or Al-Quadia said to the IRA "We will assist you 100% and supply you 100%" would the IRA scrap the peace process? Just a though
I do not know the conditions and the problems of Northern Ireland good enough. I just could find out that the IRA and some Irish people seem to dislike the British and that loyalists to Britain dislike the Irish.
Hard to say what the different groups in Northern Ireland want to achieve especially from my foreign point of view. At the moment it seems to be quiet and they seem to go a way of reconciliation. Finally it regard it as a complete local British affair which they have to deal. Answer 2 out of 8 by Schonberg on Oct 10, 2009 at 2:48 pm Permalink

That they trained in Lebanon I for example did not know.
Here in Germany we only heard very little about Northern Ireland and most people here know very few about it. But very well known and widely published is the "Bloody Sunday" and most people first think of that "bloody Sunday" which was often documented by the German TV and therefore is well known.
Bloody Sunday was bad and the Parachute Regigiment lost the plot that day.The recent troubles in Northern Ireland was a terrible thing to watch, and all it acheived was a terrible loss of civilian life. The sad thing is it will start all over again and the youths over there are already starting to cause disturbances.
Why should they change? You know how long bias and hostilities can last.
Usually they will never end as long as there is first an action and then a reaction. So, if it does not even work in Northern Ireland where people have the same language and culture, how should it work in Europe with different languages and different cultural backgrounds? So Northern Ireland is for me the very best example that Europe among certain countries never will work. So, I am rather glad and content that my country and the French found a way to overcome the worst bias and I was often and long enough in the German-French brigade to see that it can work very fine if people on both sides have the will that it works. So young people find out by their own experience that both cultures have their advantages.

There is a breakaway group called the Real IRA, but they are a very small collection of fanatics. The IRA is now incorporated into mainstream politics. As for reports of Al Q'aida infiltration, I would take those with a pinch of salt. However, I am the first one to admit I could be wrong.
As far as kicking the Brits out of Northern Ireland - we initially went there as a peacekeeping force, and ended up seeming to violently promote the status quo - something that tends to happen when you send the troops in. It was a relief to everybody, including the troops, when a political solution was reached.
If I'm truthful with you - my Worry is that I'll wake up one morning, flick on the news and see that a Joint Al-Queda/IRA bombing spree has started to take place accross Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K - Worse still what if Such a joint Bombing spree took place in the U.K and extended to Israel - Via Hamas and Hezbollah - That's why I , as a wee Northern Irelander , think the Peace process is dead :(
Well, in this case I really hope your worry is unfounded, and that the influence of the 'real IRA' remains minimal.
