Identifying an Anti-Semite can be tricky if you aren't sensitive to the tactics they use. Quite often, to the naked eye, they come across as friendly, sincere people, who have a genuine curiosity about the real "facts" of events, such as The Holocaust, and other atrocities committed against Jews (and other races). But, so often, you will find that these questions are not asked with the intention of receiving genuine answers. Rather, they are asked so that the answers given can be questioned, pulled apart, and discarded as exaggeration or hysteria on behalf of Jews.

I think, as FunSince1982 said, anyone who denies that The Holocaust happened - or who believes that the numbers of lives lost has been greatly increased by Jews, who wish to manipulate the world in their relentless hunger for power and greed - is an Anti-Semite. Equally bad, are those who insist that Anti-Semitism is decreasing, when, in fact, in many parts of the world, it is increasing at an all-too alarming rate. To play down or trivialize those atrocities is something that can only come from someone with deep hatred in their heart.

Some obvious clues would be someone who makes Anti-Semitic jokes, supports Anti-Semitic propaganda, or someone who, generally, discriminates against or is prejudiced or hostile toward Jews.

you will only find out by having long conversations with them. I remember seeing an episode of M*A*S*H where, among other things, Hawkeye was trying to expedite the marriage of a serviceman with a Korean women as well as have a rendevous with a lovely and sensual nurse...in the end he comes to her very late and apologises...she asks what made him miss the date and he tells her about the Korean girl. Suddenly and calmly she says:
"So you stood me up so one of our guys could marry a gook?" It is at that moment he realises that she is horribly racist...and he leaves her.
I think this is about the way it goes...you find out suddenly when you least expect it, and they are often not the ones you think will be the racist ones...I say this from many years of culture hopping....

    John.

You can't just "identify" an anti-semite. Thats like saying "how can I identify a white-supremicist."

You can't just look at someone and identify these traits.

I suppose if you ask them about the Holocaust, most anti-semites don't even think it existed. (How strange)

This is a very good question, and the answer is far more difficult than one might first assume.

Anti-Semitism is a complex morphing phenomenon. It has been around for thousands of years in many forms.

You can get the classic blood libels, but those are out of date and are counter-productive for anti-Semites unless their audience is stuck in the dark ages:

When you are in the Middle East expect plenty of old-style anti-Semitism. When you are in the west, classic anti-Semitism is not a popular way to attack the Jews so we have a new twist of anti-Semitism.

Changing the way people express their anti-Semitism is not new. As people are informed that Jews don't actually slaughter children on Pesach or that it is complete nonsense to blame the Jews for the Plague... those accusations begin to dissipate and new alternatives come to light.

The Protocols of Zion are an example of how people use fear tactics to attack the Jewish people. The PoZ is supposed to be the minutes a secret Jewish meeting which was uncovered, and tells about their attempts to take over the world.

    Entertaining, yes?

Well no, not if it is used as an excuse to murder.

You might be interested to know that the Hamas terrorist group who represent the "Palestinians" in government make reference to the Protocols of Zion in their charter, along with open declarations of genocide.

Today we have award winning political cartoons depicting the president of Israel, *eating babies*.
We have people saying that *Israel controls America*.

Make no mistake about it, this is anti-Semitism.

    -----

The most controversial area of anti-Semitism is where it is in the form of anti-Zionism.

Of course it is OK to criticise the formation of Israel, it is also OK to criticise the Israeli government. Israel is a democracy and thrives on rational debate. I have some extremely nasty things to say about Olmert and about the actual set up of the Israeli government. Criticism is not just OK, its good. How does anyone expect to make things better without criticism? In Israel anyone can criticise Israel in complete freedom, be they Muslim, Christian, Jew or any other faith.

This is where the grey area comes in. How can you differentiate between criticism and anti-Semitism?

And the answer: Its not always clear.

    Loharv writes it perfectly:
You can't just "identify" an anti-Semite. That's like saying "how can I identify a white-supremacist." You can't just look at someone and identify these traits.

For a case example, take a look at this:
“Which country in the Middle East is in defiance of 69 United Nations Security Council resolutions and has been protected from 29 more by U.S. vetoes?”

This question is suspicious because it is targeting Israel, but its not enough to say that there is anti-Semitism. TTP rightfully points out, Israel and Judaism are not the same. One is a secular country with a Jewish majority and the other is the Jewish people. As I wrote above, Israel, like all nations *should* be criticised.

So what makes me think that this is anti-Semitism?

Here are my first two observations:
    1) The question is designed to attack Israel (and America) rather than find out information.
    2) The question is bias to the point of misleading the reader about the nature of UN resolutions.

The user claims that his question is innocent, however a blind man can see that this question is “anti-Israel”. Its not even a question really, its an attack. (See my answer to that question on the link.)

Is this enough to say that it is anti-Semitism? No - but it does raise my suspicions, and it should yours.

    Then we have this one:
Which country in the Middle East had its Prime Minister announce to his staff not to worry about what the United States says because "We control America?"

That question was a slip-up because the anti-Semitism is *very* easy to recognise. Does that mean the user is an anti-Semite? No - but it does mean that they are spreading anti-Semitic libel. It is another warning sign, a red flag.

Many anti-Semites are clever enough to prevent their bigotry being shown brought out right into the open. You have to look for clues, like small comments. “oh, so [Anne Frank's Diary] was edited at one point? interesting..... “
    # http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/171944/554364

“Interesting.” says a lot. The more time you spend around anti-Semites the better you will be at detecting the signs.

I will leave that user alone for this answer now.

When the UN votes that Zionism is Racism, they are being anti-Semitic.

When people attack Israel and accuse Israel of false crimes against humanity, it is often a case of anti-Semitism:

When the media spreads lies they are teaching you what to think. It is the foundation for genocide:

I *suspect* anti-Semitism when the Red Cross denied that Israel can use the Shield of David when the Cross and the Crescent are permitted.

    -----

Its difficult to tell at times, but we can add up 1 + 1.
