It kind of defeats the purposes of sandals. I mean, you wear them when it's nice and hot out and all...but it isn't wrong.
People can do what they want, and if they enjoy how it looks, or if the combination of socks and sandals is comfortable for them, then it doesn't matter how "wrong" other people find it to be.

Its contradictory. You wear socks to keep your feet warm, you wear sandals to keep your feet cool. It makes no sense, and its ugly.

It isn't. But some people think it is. It is just a matter of fashion to them.
I will wear socks with sandals (Berkinstock types. No thong between the toes). It keeps my feet much more comfortable, keeps my sandals cleaner and they last longer, and I am very careful to coordonate the color and only wear socks that are in top condition. I don't care if the snooty neighbor thinks they look dorky. I think pink hair, shaved heads & eyebrows, sagging pants, and studded faces look dorky, but I would never tell them that. I am kind and appreciate diversity.

Thanks everybody for your answers, you all get points. I wanted to add what none has mentioned here and maybe it's an observation worth considering:
Tourists.... it seems that many people wouldn't be caught dead wearing sandals with socks, yet as soon as they hit a warm place with beaches, they think it's all right, because ..."I mean, everybody does it, why not?".
This pattern of behavioural adaption when visiting another country is repeated over and over again, with Europeans being highly "guilty" of this comfortable crime as well as people from the United States just to name a few examples, (Canadians, Australians...anyone?)
Men are twice as likely as women to wear sandals with socks... why? Is it because women are more fashion aware than men are? HIghly arguable...
If there is a secret predisposition for people to wear this combination then I figure that someone out there should risk designing a product that combines socks and sandals in a "fashionably-accepted" way.
In the 80's a lot of "Fashion crimes" were committed, but now they are thought as "OMG that's so cool!" maybe this can happen to socks and sandals.

2nd Answer.
I remember my dad wearing white socks with sandals.
I was 8 or 9 years old. at that time, i thought my dad was a fashionable sort of guy, until one morning we were going to the lake and he appeared with socks and sandals. i told myself, at that time, that i would never, ever wear this combination on my feet.
I loved my dad, but those socks and sandals were just plain HICKEY. this is another southern word for redneck or a hick.
