I agree with you completely. Imagine is a fine song yes, quite pretty and certainly quite popular. But as for being "worshiped" by anyone....well, frankly it's more in the same category as "Glass Onion" or, "I am the walrus".

Now here's a truly first rate - "spiritual" John Lennon song....enjoy!

I've never really been a fan of his solo stuff, and I was given a best of John Lennon CD many years ago at Christmas and the only two songs I generally listen to on it are Imagine and Working Class Hero, so for me personally these are his best two (solo) songs, out of the stuff I've heard. I know best ofs don't always actually have the best of someone's output and I'm not generally a fan of them, but they do usually give a rough guide to whether you would want to investigate further, and in this case I didn't, though I have heard other solo material by him.

They probably decided to play it on the radio a bit more than the other songs, and that got more requests, and then it went on... I know some thought goes into what song to introduce to people as a "hit".

My personal fave is `Working class hero`. The video for `Imagine` has way too much Yoko Ono in it. She always reminds me of that child in the `Ring` movies, except Yoko is scarier.

Imagine raises the good questions, and for that it's note-worthy, but it doesn't even attempt to ANSWER them.
Therefore it can hardly be called John Lennon's primary contribution to social philosophy.
I think the song has its deserved place in music history, AS LONG AS you remember it isn't by itself a complete philosophy at all. That doesn't detract from Lennon's brilliance at musing, but I'm afraid it DOES detract from the sophistication of the people who think the song is EVERYthing you need to know to live productively.

If you don't get the significance of "Imagine," I can't help you.
