The only thing that I can add to what the two previos ABers said is to increase the amount of exercise your dog gets. I work with elderly women and constipation can be an issue with them as well, and I have been taught that exercise encourages digestion and helps prevent constipation.
One day without is never a concern here. I try to make sure they always have pleanty of water, I at times will add some pure pumking pie filling ot apple sauce to help things along in a older dog. Don't want to rant but most commercial dog food is junk and is even worse in older dogs. +5
When it starts getting into the every other day range, then that's when you need to be on alert. A little secret of mine is 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in my older dog's diet every day!
