Question

Help answer this question below.

While I do not allow it, and try to discourage it every way possible, my dog continually does or tries to eat my cat's food. Why is that/is it bad for the dog/ how can I stop him from doing it in the future?

Cat food contains different nutrients that can be bad for dogs. It also is generally higher on fat and can add to a dog's weight issues. I keep my cat's food on a tall surface, out of reach for the dogs.

Cat food isn't necessarily any worse for dogs than dog food. It might be a little higher tin fat, but it's basically the same. What is bad is to feed dog food to cats as they need some nutrients that are routinely not found in dog food.

If you fed both your pets a species appropriate diet, like raw natural foods, it would be best for all of them and it wouldn't matter if they shared food. Commercial pet food as grains and vegetable matter in them plus lots of salt and additives that they actually can't digest, especially cats, which can't digest grains or carbs. Both of them are carnivores. If you want to feed them the best way, either switch to an all natural diet or find food that has no gluten in it. They will thank you for it with much better health, smaller stools and less poop lol!!!

As to how to keep them from eating each others food, we only feed each of them once or twice a day. They have a set eating time, are presented with the food. They eat and know there won't be more. It has really helped the weight problem our house cats were getting.

It is very bad for the dog; my dog has gotten diarrhea from eating cat food. As for the cat litter box, I have yet to find a way to keep my dog out of it completely. I have a covered box, and the way I have the opening positioned there should be just enough room for my cat to get into it. Plus, I have a heavy box on top of the cover to the box as Chloe has figured out how to take the cover off.
