Can't sell my couches, been trying for the past few months, lowered the price multiple times, craigslist and myspace ads. No avail. Salvation Army good second choice? How does that tax back stuff work? What if they don't put in the paperwork?

The Salvation Army will take your couch & sell it, to finance their charitable functions. They don't give away furniture to needy people, but run one of the most effective drug treatment facilities. All of their services are based on your ability to pay.
As for the tax advantages, you are allowed to take the fair market value of the couch. The place you donate to don't have to submit anything to the government. They will give you a receipt, which you keep for your tax records. Basicly, for every dollar you give, you get 25 cents in tax credits.

I don't know about the tax stuff but Salvation Army isn't what people think it is. I know a lady who lost everything in a fire and was on soc security and they refused to let her have furniture. She didn't qualify. If you want to go that route though I urge you to contact places like the domestic violence shelters or shelters for homeless. When those women get out of the DV shelters they have NOTHING. Most of them go into the DV shelters with only the clothes on their back. They sure can't afford to buy furniture for a new home. Shelters will usually know who needs it and who doesn't. When you are homeless and move out on your own you are usually begging for those things. Good luck.
