A router routes signals. In the simplest case, in a home network with two computers and one device connected to the internet, the router would send each computers internet output to the device and route the return traffic to the proper computer.
A wireless access point is a device that allows computers to access the internet wirelessly. It would be connected to a router. In our home scenario, the router would in all likelihood have a WAP built in.
