it is normal for a diesel to smoke when cold
the rough idle could be anything from dirty fuel filter(s) to a failing injector pump
I would take it to a pro to have it tuned and checked out
without special tools you really can't tune it urself
the problem with a loud diesel is that it is hard to ell if there is an internal engine problem
you could hear a rod know in a gas engine, but it hard to sdo so in a diesel

Where is the knock sensor on a 2001 Mazda 626. The check engine light is on and the code says bad knock sensor.

You're reading My 1996 mazda mpv diesel engine emits so much smoke when the engine is cold. however, after about 5 minutes, the smoke disappear. the engine runs good and has a lot of power though the idling is so rough. why is this so? please help me solve the problem.
