Musical instrument retailers have to cover not just the wholesale price of the instrument, but also their overhead. To do so, musical instrument retailers, like most retailers in general, include a mark-up in their prices. Try to find a second-hand drum set (by looking in the classified ads section of your local newspaper, for example); these sets should be much more affordable than the ones you buy in a store.
