Question

Help answer this question below.

I bought a dress pattern that says you should use a linen blend or rayon for the fabric. I'd rather use a knit. Is that going to mess things up while sewing? I know it won't have the same sleek look, but I need something bouncier, anyway.

It really just depends on the shape of the dress. Linen and Rayon flow, so look for a soft knit, it'll flow nicely too. Shouldn't mess up at all:)

If I were you I'd find a pattern that you like that recommends using the materials you want.

No matter what, if you go ahead with this project using a knit, it will not turn out how it's meant to. That may be a good thing or a bad thing, but you won't know until you're done. If you're happy to look on this as a fun experiment and you're not so concerned with the results then go ahead and enjoy! That's the best way to learn, after all. But if you're invested in the end-result, or if you find sowing at all stressful, I think you should choose the safe route and pick a pattern that matches your fabric.

The reason I mention "stressful" is because it's not just a matter of how the end result will look: because you're using a different fabric, it won't respond the way your pattern expects it to, so you'll find you will have to do many modifications and adjustments to the pattern and to the fabric as you go along. I.e. yes it will "mess things up while sowing." It will be a much more tedious -- or creative, depending on your point of view -- process. Be warned!

If you are inexperienced with substitutions, this will be a good one to practice with, but be prepared to be surprised with the result. It might not turn out the way you want it to.
