Help answer this question below.
From what I've learned, it is the policy of the USA to never submit to terrorists. Period. So this would probably trigger the biggest millitary invasion in world history.
tactical nukes
they can easily wipe out a country without collateral damage
I don't think the terrorists are that stupid. I don't think any country or group is that stupid. It would be their death sentence.
If that happened you could rest assured that there would be no more Middle East or North Korea. They would be gone...
Nuke all their nukes; politely refuse and ask if you can talk about it over crumpets; lift your kilt and moon them until they can't stand it any more and give up.
It is inconceivable that a terrorist group could develop a working nuclear bomb on their own. But say they did get a few, we've got thousands. We would launch an all-out attack against the nation state that provided them the weapons and against any state giving them sanctuary.
There is no compromising with religious fundamentalist when they reach the intensity of killing innocent people to get their way. Their eventual goal is to either convert or kill everyone not accepting their own belief system.
I believe the best alternative would be waking up.
Terrorist groups don't have nuclear weaponry.
Teach the muslims the notion that allah doesn't like them after all.
well as far as I know there is no chance to comply because as soon as someone launches nukes at us we automatically launch nukes at them and then everyone will probably jump in and that's pretty much the endgame.
Who are you? And what have you done with my friend the Blob?
Bring about total societal change before that happens maybe. Not really sure. What I do know is that killing more people than they kill will not solve the problem. All it does is give the remaining survivors a reason to hate us. Of course Americans will say they deserve it and have no reason to hate us, but we base our knowledge on the info we want to believe just as much as they do. So if they choose to look at the nuking of the U.S. as revenge, Americans might look at it as terrorism. Then if America uses a nuke, the Americans will look at it as revenge, and those we nuked would look at that as terrorism.
.
The bottom line is that violence is not a solution. The only way possible it would work would be if every single piece of info and person who believed in a certain idea were destroyed. But considering a person's knowledge changes every day, there is still no guarantee that the idea will be dead forever.
.
The best way to deal with a hypothetical future attack, is to work towards an understanding that no individual society is perfect and that killing innocent civilians doesn't solve the problem. There are always more solutions than the ones presented by the leadership of either America or the terrorist organization you refer to.
.
By the way, terrorism is not a tactic employed solely by guerilla militants. Quite abundant throughout the Bush/ Cheney regime is the use of 9/11 in order to get Americans to agree to policy positions. The use of hell in religion is also an example of terrorism (an arguable position, I know.)
Kill 'em all.
Depends on the cities they choose. If they knock out NY, Washington, Boston, and San Francisco, there wouldn't be enough liberals left to stop us from nuking Mecca and whatever godforsaken deserts the terrorists use as bases. Without those 2 groups, the world really could start over with a fair chance at getting it right this time.

You're reading If (when) a terrorist group uses nukes to hit 2 or 3 or 4 major US cities, then presents us with the ultimatum to withdraw from the Middle East and cut off aid to Israel, what alternative is there to complying?

And who, exactly, would we invade? The US already occupies Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
.
And how would we pay for the $300/bbl. oil that's needed to power all of the tanks/planes/APCs/trucks/etc.?
by Old School on October 5th, 2009
Tom, I can see your point, but dang details... The US would have to institute a draft to raise enough troops to invade & occupy Iran or Pakistan, either of which would be Iraq x 5 or 10 in terms of difficulty and casualties. Who would pay for that when the US is in a depression due to the loss of NY and other cities, and China has cut off our credit because we're no longer a good risk? And the perps would be a few smallish cells moving around; millions of soldiers couldn't defend against that.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but the devil's in the details.

I agree. I also think it's wrong. I'm just pointing out what the US is likely to do based on thier advertised policy and their history in similar situations. I don't think that it is the right thing to do, and I definately have some issues about what "Old School" had to say about how we have to pay for this. We are in such a financial recession right now, the last thing we need is an expensive war to pay finance. Now that we no longer have a member of the Bush family in office, maybe the new administration will hopefully take a look at alternatives.
