What? Like a chalkboard? Or phonelines for TTY connections strung all over the place?
I can't see any value in this and it certainly would present an unworkable tangle for the teacher who hasn't time for it.
If you mean for a single individual child who cannot communicate well except by typeing, then go with IM. It is fast, cheap and already in place.
a Typewriter and permission to throw paper
No teacher has the time to communicate with each student this way. That is preposterous. The best you can do is use the local part of the computer not the net and use your word processing tools and just take notes. No teacher has the time to answer each of you back. Just talk for godsakes. That is the best method of learning and communication anyway. TALK and ANSWER in a class or lecture forum.

You're reading Does anyone know of a system that can be used in the classroom for the teacher and students to type messages back and forth to each other, rather than verbal communication? preferably something NOT via internet?

This addresses a teaching method where teachers are able to save time communicating with students one at a time? No siree. The teacher still has to address each student. The Deaf need this not the public who have hearing skills.

What works for ONE group of students, can work for another

How would you like to be a teacher typing all day to answer questions to normal students who can hear? Correcting papers takes up all the free time as it is, now add answering queries by typing all day long. No. You must mean something I am not getting here. This works for a small class but not as a rule in a big school. No?
