It's OK to do that, but only if you make sure the hook is driven securely into a joist (one of the heavy pieces of wood which lie under the wallboard or plaster of the ceiling).
In most buildings, joists are placed 24" apart, and they're 2" wide. So your job is to determine where they are and drive the hook into one solidly.
There are electronic tools you can buy to locate joists, they cost about $20. But you can also do it the old-fashioned way:
1. Stand on a stool, and tap on the ceiling with your knuckle or a light tool. Most of the time, it will sound hollow, and then as you move back and forth you will find areas that sound more solid.
2. Keep tapping and moving around until you have a good idea which direction the joists are running, and where they are in the area you want to hang the bike.
3. Get a 2" nail and tap it into the ceiling where you think the joist might be. It should hit solid wood -- if not, move it a bit and try again. Do this enough times until you're confident that you've found the approximate center of the wood.
4. Drive the hook into the ceiling at that point, sink it deeply into the wood.
You should be able to hang your body weight on that hook, and presumably the bike weighs less than you do. Two hooks shouldn't be necessary if the one is well seated. I suggest hanging the bike from the front wheel, simply because it's easier -- you don't have all the gears and cables to mess with and the front is usually lighter.

I know for a fact that bicyclists are respected as motorists on the streets in Europe, why isn't it the same in America?
